Vietnam: IBAHRI welcomes reduction in scope of death penalty and calls for full abolition
A recent article has reported that the International Bar Association’s Human Rights Institute (IBAHRI) has welcomed amendments to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam’s Criminal Code.
As of 1 July 2025, the death penalty for eight offences has been abolished which include activities against the government, espionage, sabotaging State facilities, manufacture or trade of counterfeit medicines, illegal transportation of narcotic substances, embezzlement, taking bribes, and disruption of peace, provocation of war of aggression.
The article further reports that while the reduction in the scope of the death penalty marks a positive step forward, IBAHRI urges Vietnam to go further and abolish the death penalty entirely.
