Joint submission: Australia’s fourth UPR

Since 2018, Australia has committed to opposing the death penalty 'in all circumstances for all people' - this firm position is what drives the Australian Government to be a strong leader in the global movement to abolish the death penalty.

On 17 July 2025, the Julian Wagner Memorial Fund, together with our partners the Capital Punishment Justice Project and the Anti-Death Penalty Asia Network, made a joint submission to the fourth Universal Periodic Review of Australia.

In our joint submission for the fourth Universal Periodic Review of Australia, the Julian Wagner Memorial Fund Inc, Capital Punishment Justice Project and Anti Death Penalty Asia Network focus on how to ensure our practices reflect our strong abolitionist policy.

We must review our international crime cooperation policy and practice with countries that continue to impose the death penalty. This means further limiting how and when the Australian Federal police provide cooperation on mutual assistance requests, extradition, and police-to-police cooperation.
